Paul Hanrahan
Hanrahan demonstrates masterful handling of the water colour medium achieved with a spontaneity and rapidity of execution. The light being captured in the unbrushed areas of his work with a semi-impressionistic style. Presenting very exacting technique that has taken him many years to perfect. Before discovering painting architecture and advertising took precedence. Paul was educated in Oamaru. His work is held in many private collections including the New Zealand High Commission in London. He explains “The whiteness of the paper is important and I try and use only one wash where possible. I need the exact tone, the ratio of pigment is critical and my brush is almost dry... this adds to the sparkle and creates areas of light and dark... it is a very direct form of painting that doesn’t rely on overlays of colour.”
